General Music Syllabus
Mr. Peter Kiley, General Music Teacher
Goal
Students will develop musical skills by singing, performing on instruments, improvising and composing, reading and notating music, listening to and evaluating music, and relating music to history, culture, and other arts.
Overview
General music class at Winman Junior High School is primarily hands-on. Students will gain experience performing on electric pianos, acoustic guitars, percussion instruments, string instruments, and a variety of wind instruments. General music students frequently perform for their peers during in-class performance sessions.
Developing an understanding of written music is a goal of general music class. In addition to learning to read and notate music using traditional symbols and techniques, students will experiment with non-traditional symbols and techniques by creating their own music.
During the music history section, students listen to and analyze the major musical works of significant composers. The objective is to develop an appreciation of the many diverse styles of music.
