Science Olympiad

For the third year, Winman has been able to participate in the

State Science Olympiad competition due to a generous grant

from Mayor Avedesian’s office. Led by Mrs. Conklin and Mr.

Atoyan, our small brave band competed in 27 different sciencebased

activities against students from many other RI schools at

Rhode Island College. Our team was comprised of:

Rachel Gilbert, Isaac Davis, Matt Cullen, Murianne Lemus,

Nick Smith, Abby Patenaude, Julie Penn and Victoria Bucci.

Isaac won a second place finish with his partner Nick Smith in

the “Write It/ Do It” event. Isaac also won a 3rd place finish in

the “Science Bowl” event.

Foreign Language Winners

Mrs. Zompa, Ms. Pryor and Mrs. Sanda have received the results

of the world language exams. It needs to be understood

that our 8th graders compete with students from public and private

schools across the state. Every year Winman students do

amazingly well and that is a credit to the excellent teachers in

the World Language department who consult on a daily basis

and conscientiously push each other to find a way to teach the

material better.

For the 2009 National Italian contest, the results were:

4th place Sarah Bedetta

6th place Jennifer Barry

7th place Tori Uglialoro

9th place Mark Stockton

10th place Kara Coogan

Our eighth graders in French did very well on their National

exam. Locally the results were:

3rd place Nicholas Rodriques**

3rd place Mimi Zhang**

4th place Anna Walsh

5th place Elena Chace

**These students were both ranked 9th nationally as

compared to high school students across the country.

Our seventh graders also participated in the exam process.

Their only competition was children from the Lincoln School in

Providence. This experience gets them ready for next year’s

competition against schools all over the state. Their results on

the French exam were:

4th place Katherine Lavallee

6th place Jacob Rosenberg

Ashley Ayotte

Andrea Schultz

8th place Adeline Lamothe

Jacob Newell
