Policies, Procedures and Rules
1. Lateness: Arrive to class on time. When the bell rings, you must be in your assigned seat with your materials out and ready. Place your materials for other classes on the floor underneath your desk and leave only your mathematics materials on the desk. If you are late, you are expected to have a signed agenda. If you do not have a signed agenda, you will be assigned an after-school detention.
2. Prepared for Class: You must come to class prepared everyday. This means that you must have your three ring binder with lined filler paper in it, a pen, pencil, calculator, covered textbook and agenda. It is very important that you textbook be covered. Failure to do so will result in having the book taken away until a book cover is brought in. If this means that no homework can be done, then you must accept the consequences. Lost books must be reported at once and payment must be made within three days so that you can acquire a new book. Your textbook is brand new this year and the replacement fee is $60.
3. Beginning Class: When the bell rings and your teacher enters the classroom, this is the signal for class to begin. You should be in your assigned seat with your homework out. Your pencil should be sharpened and you are to work on your daily warm-up problem as I check your homework.
4. Lavatory, Nurse, Lockers: Do not ask to be excused from class unless it is an emergency. Lavatory use is allowed during the first five and last minutes of class. If you are out of class for an extended period of time, expect to be questioned (on your own time after school) as to your whereabouts. Permission to go to your locker will never be granted. Do not ask. As a junior high student, you need to learn to come to class prepared.
5. Minor Discipline Problems: For a minor problem, you will be told to report to me after school. In most cases, you will be assigned detention for the day of the infraction – you will not receive a 24 hour notice. Failure to report after school earns an automatic referral to the vice principal. If problematic behavior persists, then a call home to inform the parents about the problem is necessary. Cooperation from your parents will be expected to help prevent re-occurrence of the problem.
1st offense: verbal warning
2nd offense: after-school detention
3rd offense: referral to the vice principal
6. Disruptive Behavior: Students posing a threat to the other students in the classroom or to the normal classroom routine will be immediately sent to the office.
7. Fire Drills: NO TALKING!! Move silently and quickly to the designated exit. Stay with the class since attendance is taken outside. Return to class immediately at the end of the drill or risk being marked late. The last student to leave the room is to turn off the lights and close the doors.
8. Announcements: Quiet during announcements. No matter what is going on in class, it must be quiet for these announcements. Even if the announcements do not pertain directly to you, there may be something very important for one of your classmates to hear.
9. Class Dismissal: The TEACHER, neither the bell nor the activity out in the corridor dismisses you. You will remain seated and silent until the teacher says that you can leave. If it is the last period of the day, your chair must be put up on the desk before leaving the room. Lining up at the door is not allowed.
10. Graded Assignments: All graded work must be done in pencil. Assignments that are being turned in for a grade must have your name on them; otherwise they will be thrown out. In addition to your name, it must also have the date on it. If it is an assignment from the book, the page and numbers must also be in the heading. Grading is done according to the school’s formula. Below a 65 is an E. There is no extra credit allowed. I keep your grades on my computer and grade sheet printouts can be requested at anytime. These printouts are to be signed by a parent and returned the next day.
11. Grading: Your grade consists of the following components:
a. Daily Warm-Ups (5%)
b. Homework (10%)
c. Class work (5%)
d. Quizzes (30%)
e. Tests (30%)
f. Challenge Problems (7.5%)
g. Mountain Math (5%)
h. Notebook (7.5%)
12. Notes: Notes will be given each day in class. They are a required part of this class and will be graded quarterly. They must be neat, complete and organized. Dates should be included on daily notes. You are responsible to copy all the notes put up on the board or overhead. If you are absent, you are expected to copy a classmate’s notes. Notes should be kept in your binder for the entire quarter. If notes are lost, it is your responsibility to make a new copy.
13. Quizzes: Quizzes may be given at any time. They are usually announced in advance, but pop quizzes may be given on occasion. Expect to have about one quiz each week and about three tests each quarter.
14. Absence: Attendance is the major problem correlated to 90% of poor grades. If you know in advance that you will be absent, talk to me to get your assignments. An appropriate time to do so is either before school, after school, or during the first five or last five minutes of class. If you are absent, you are to get the notes that you missed from another classmate when you return. If you miss a class work or homework assignment, it is your responsibility to get it from me or a classmate when you return. If you miss a test or a quiz, you have two weeks to make it up. Tests and quizzes can not be made up during class time. You are expected to attend department night to take quizzes and tests.
15. Make-Up Tests: You have 2 department nights to make up all tests and quizzes missed due to absence. If you do not make up the test within 2 department nights, you will receive a zero for the missed work.
16. Department Night: Math department night is on Tuesday for the 2007-2008 school year. This is an opportunity to make up missing quizzes or tests and to receive extra help. If you are attending to receive help, come prepared with specific topics and questions.
17. Warnings: Warnings can be distributed at any time throughout the quarter. They must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned the next day. If they are not returned, a detention will be assigned.

a. Do not write on the desks
