Summer Reading
Three of Pilgrim’s Guiding beliefs are that
All Students can reach their academic potential
Students learn best when they are actively engaged with their own learning
Diverse concepts and ideas are an integral part of the school community
In support of these beliefs, the Pilgrim Science Department requires all students to participate in the Summer Reading Program. With the exception of incoming students of Chemical Science, Chemistry I, Chemistry I Honors and Biology II AP, all Pilgrim Science students are expected to read at least one of the books from the following list. An assessment will be administered during the second full day of science class which will count toward 10% of the student’s grade for the 1st quarter. The reading selections are:
2001: a Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton
A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
Cosmos by Carl Sagan
Dune by Frank Hubert
Edge of the Sea by Rachael Carlson
King Solomon’s Ring by Konrad Lorenz
Lab 257: The Disturbing Story of the Government’s Secret Plum Island Germ Laboratory by Michael C. Carroll
Lives of a Cell by Lewis Thomas
Rascal by Sterling North
Sand Country Almanac by Aldo Leonard
Silent Spring by Rachael Carlson
Soul of a New Machine by Tracy Kidder
Stephen Hawking’s Universe by John Boslough
NOTE: IF YOU WILL BE TAKING CHEMICAL SCIENCE, , CHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY I HONORS, OR BIOLOGY II AP, GO BACK TO THE SCIENCE DIRECTORY AND SELECT THE ASSIGNMENT FOR CHEMISTRY, OR AP BIOLOGY!
