I just wanted to send a quick reminder that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." With the MRSA infection now in the news and colds and the flu at our doorstep, we all need to remember and remind our children that they need to be washing their hands well. Many times when they wash, they go through the motions without killing the germs that are on their hands and all around us. It is important to wash your hands for 20 seconds to rid the germs. I suggest to the students to continue to scrub all of the
surfaces (including wrists, between fingers, and especially nails) while reciting someting that will take 20 seconds like singing, "Happy Birthday" TWO times or counting: one Mississippi, two Mississippi, etc., to twenty. They should wash their hands before eating, after coughing or sneezing into their hands, whenever their hands look dirty and especially after using the bathroom facilities.
If hands are dry or cracked, they should be monitored to prevent open areas for germs to enter the body. As they learned in elementary school the skin is the first line of defense. Hopefully good hand washing, healthy eating, and a good night's sleep will keep us all healthy through this winter!! Stay safe!!
